Dr Joanne Patterson, PhD, FRCSLT is an expert Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) and Senior Clinical Lecturer, specialising in dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), funded jointly by City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University. I lead the SLT service for ENT including head and neck cancer and voice disorders and have 28 years of clinical experience. At the University, I am involved in several regional, national and international studies as lead applicant, co-applicant and co-investigator. I have extensive experience in study design, quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodologies and research processes. I have received a Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RCSLT) Fellowship in recognition of my contribution to the advancement of the profession, both as an academic and a practicing SLT. As their specialist advisor, I represent the organisation on a number of committees and councils, contributing towards policy and strategic direction. I have extensively developed research capacity for SLTs and Nurses, Midwives and Allied Healthcare Professionals (NMAHPs) nationally through grant and fellowship applications and provision of supervision, teaching and mentorship. Also has numerous research publication.
